Darkness

Eliezer's life is in darkness. Darkness portrays fear and hopelessness.  He is lost, confused, and see's only dark around him.  He see's no goodness, or hope.  Only black.  He doesn't even consider himself a man.  He is a black flame in his eyes.  He has no soul.  He see's nothing good in the world. He is surrounded by hatred.

Fire

In the bible, fire is very common.  From God appearing as a burning bush, to destroying a city with fire from the sky, to saving Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from a firey furnace.  Fire is a symbol of power and up until this time in his life, Eliezer has linked fire with his God.  Seeing the Nazi's in control of this power makes him question his faith, along with everything else he has seen.  It diminishes his hope for God to save him.  The Nazi's control everything.  They become almost God like in his eyes.

In the Back of His Mind

Eliezer's survival throughout the holocaust is solely caused by his desire to live and stay with his father.  They became all each other had at the camps.  Their love for one another is what kept them from giving up.  All around him, Eliezer, see's hatred and sin.  He swears he will never treat his father the way some had treated their's.  He was more important to him than food.
I choose this photo because, as much as he tries to stay by his father, he is slowly seperating himself from him.  In the back of his mind his is seeing him as a nuisance and he hates himself for that. He doesn't want to out of his life, but it would be easier for him in some situations if he was.

Living in a Nightmare

Eliezer is still a child when he is thrown into the ghetto's and eventually forced into the concentration camp.  He has never seen the evil possible in the world and can't understand why this is happening.  The brutal acts of the Nazi's are horrific to him.  He is living in the worst nightmare possible.  Not only do the Kapo's and other officer's treat them like nothing, they turn against one another! Why would they do this?  At thirteen years old, Eliezer will never see the world through a child's eyes again.

Elie is Disgusted

While Elie suffers all the pain and is forced to live in a hell created by the Nazi's, the world outside the concentration camp stays silent.  There are no attempts by the German citizens around him to stop this, or find out what or why this was happening.  He is not capable to doing anything.  He is completely helpless.  Not only are the people staying mute, his own God has shown no intention of retaliating!  He is doing nothing to save his people.  Elie is disgusted.  This severely scars any type of relationship he had ever had with God.  He doesn't understand how He can turn his head and apparently be on a leave while they are being persecuted.  The Holocaust was a major event in many people's lives, but it also has become a metaphor for our century.  There cannot be an end to speaking and writing about it.

A Walk in the Woods

Eliezer's Struggle to Maintain Faith
We're all used to the sun and a bright sky, not many of us go out at night.  I doubt any of you go for a night time walk through the woods by yourself. If you did, it would be easy to get lost.  We second guess ourselves. Everything changes and looks different.  The light in this picture represents God.  Eliezer's life used to be full of his God.  He felt surrounded by him. Now, he is thrown into darkness. He is lost.
I choose this photo to represent Eliezer's struggle with his faith in God simply because of the contrast in light and dark.  Throughout the book, there is so much darkness around him, it's hard for him to keep the light in sight.  God is still there for him, he just doesn't look hard enough.  There are bad people and darkness closing in all around him.  It's hard for him to see any light. He feels blind.
